from my berea notes: "today i met loyal jones. he is like joseph campbell or a wise man with a grin, charming, handsome, very much alive. this is a man that has worked much of his life collecting songs, conducting interviews, contemplating the culture and soul of many people. i didn’t have too much to say. i was tired, caught off guard. now in the evening i am thinking of all sorts of questions to ask, but i was quiet then. i was afraid that he would find out i am sampling everything. he had amusing stories to tell (being a storyteller), including one of alan lomax collecting ‘authentic’ folk songs from a singer that learned them from a book just to please alan lomax...."
