4|howard chalmer : lining out (from the william talmadge collection, 1968)

 
humble, thoughtful, slightly embarrassed in front of the recorder. “would anybody like a book?” asks talmadge, and of course they do not need one…talmadge, from the north, always sounds just a little out of place, an outsider quality that comes across in the recordings of his collection (which i like very much)….the singing: the sound of voices **finding their way together** without fear, shame, or shyness––amazing––how do they do this?
